Coffee Quest #33: Peoples Coffee on Lukes Lane

Peoples coffee on Lukes Lane is, in my opinion, one of the cosier cafes in Wellington. A large glut of them fail in providing any amount of proper ambience and kindness to their customers, you go in and grab coffee or you sit in the most uncomfortable loud echoing spaces that viscerally attack all your senses. (I'm looking at you, Glou Glou. How you came so highly rated is a mystery.)

Oh yeah, get this. They also serve great coffee. My expectations have been smashed so low by New Zealand, this came as a genuine surprise. The lady who served us was dressed like the French Flag--you can see her in the background of the first photo--red beret, blue shirt, white stockings, and she was an incredibly lovely person as well. I enjoyed chatting with her, though the time was sparse since we entered during rush hour.

I ordered the Guatemala Huehuetenango because I've already had the other filters. They messed up my order and accidentally gave me a different cup. The barista was very apologetic and I felt bad and told him, "no, it's okay, I'll take it" but he was very insistent on getting it right and said he'd drink the cup during his own break.

Then rush hour happened and a bunch of people came in one by one and suddenly he was swamped with orders. To tide me over, he quickly gave me a pre-brewed cup of Colombia to try on the house.

Damn, he didn't need to. What a nice guy. :eggbug-heart-sob:

Anyway, I did eventually get my Guatemala Huehuetenango. It's something I've been meaning to try because it tastes 'tea-like'. I haven't had a bunch of these types before--really, the last time I had a tea-like coffee in Geneva at this really cute hole in the wall. I remember drinking the cup and going--hang on. Did they actually serve me tea?

No! It's just interesting coffee.

The sweetness came after the initial tea flavours. A little bit of depth to the sweetness, so it was nice. Finally, there's a bright citrus note at the end. It does smell like goji berry, but incredibly faint. The texture of the coffee is very light.

You'll see they gave me a free coffee card as an apology. Guys, it's okay, I didn't wait that long. But the barista really had to knock out shot after shot of espresso for the mass of people coming in for takeaways, so getting my filter order wrong really happened at the most inopportune time.

Nice cafe, nice coffee, lovely people. I would go back. <3
