Coffee Quest #15: Humble Rays Melbourne

Humble Rays Melbourne's exterior might not seem like much, but this is quite a massive cafe that extends all the way around the back. There was a significant line for this place, and the longer we dined, the bigger the line got. The place feel a bit cold and diner-like because of the mass amount of subway tiles, and while they tried to use warm layers of lighting to compensate, they mixed a garish white light anyway which clashes with the atmosphere.

YES. THIS. VERY GOOD.

This is Roller Roastery's Kenyan Filter Roast. I very much enjoyed it. It smelled wonderfully of blueberries. My partner said the mouthfeel was like drinking white wine and I agree. There's also a wonderful, lasting sweetness, and the acidity arrives at the very end in a very gentle way. If you're not a fan of very tart/sour coffees, you might still enjoy this one.

An excellent pour over coffee.

This is Humble's flagship dish - the Crab Meat Scramble. So popular they even made enamel pins of the dish that you can buy.

My partner loved it a lot. She said it was the best breakfast she's had in Melbourne so far, but do note she's a very big fan of shellfish. I thought it was good. The prawn crackers on the side (EDIT: turns out prawn crackers do have actual prawn in them, thank you @Arbg!) were a bit stale. The croissant was very soft and paired very well, and I'm glad they chose a cheaper, less chewier croissant, because it really does match the soft crab egg scramble a lot better. The smell was nice too.

Overall, very enjoyable, even if the presentation feels a bit messy.

If you're coming to Humble, just note that they're very packed even on a regular weekday. Their proximity to the University of Melbourne means that they get a lot of traffic, and you might wish to go a little bit earlier to grab a seat. Service-wise was okay, the staff are trying very hard to juggle the amount of people coming in and all the orders going around.

The coffee was very nice though. I'll be keeping an eye out for Roller coffee in the future.
